A Meditation Experience I Will Never Forget

Richa ·

Some experiences are so beautiful that words can never fully capture them. Yet, they stay in your heart forever, reminding you that there is so much more to life than what we can see or explain.

This is one such experience from my life.

It was around 2017 or 2018. I was relatively new to meditation and had attended a tantra meditation session with my husband. I had been practising yoga and meditation, but I had never experienced anything quite like what happened that day.

There were around 40 people in the room, seated in rows of about 10. The facilitator began guiding us through the meditation, with music playing softly in the background.

As I settled into the meditation, something unexpected happened. My attention slowly moved away from the facilitator’s voice. I went into a deeply meditative state, almost as if I had entered my own little world.

And then, suddenly, I felt it.

From my left side, diagonally across from where I was sitting, I sensed an incredibly heavy energy. Along with it came a deep, overwhelming sadness. It felt as though someone in that room was carrying immense pain.

I couldn’t explain what I was feeling. I didn’t know why I was feeling it or what it meant. I simply felt a profound sadness that didn’t seem to be my own.

When the meditation ended and I opened my eyes, the first thing I did was look towards the direction from which I had felt that heaviness.

There was a woman sitting diagonally opposite me.

I noticed her, but I said nothing.

The facilitator then invited everyone to share their experiences from the meditation. As my turn approached, I became hesitant. I had no words for what I had experienced. How could I explain something I didn’t even understand myself?

Finally, my turn came.

I didn’t know what to make of my experience, and I certainly didn’t want to make assumptions about what she might be going through.

And the moment I began to speak, something extraordinary happened.

I burst into tears.

I started sobbing uncontrollably, like a child. I couldn’t hold back the tears, and I couldn’t explain why I was crying so intensely. The only words I managed to say were:

“I sense that someone in this room is carrying a deep sadness. It feels as though they are going through something incredibly difficult.”

That was all I could say before the tears took over again.

I didn’t mention the woman or point towards her. I didn’t want to single anyone out or make her feel uncomfortable. I was simply sharing what I had felt.

And then something happened that I will never forget.

The very woman I had sensed stood up and said, “I want to give you a hug.”

She walked towards me and held me in a very tight embrace.

I cannot describe what I felt in that moment. I had goosebumps. I was overwhelmed with emotion, and once again, words failed me.

My husband, who was sitting beside me, later told me that it was a beautiful thing to witness. When I had started crying, he had wondered what he should do. Should he come forward and hug me? Before he could decide, the woman had already stood up and embraced me.

It was such a deeply moving moment. Two people, connected through an experience neither of us had planned or expected.

I still find it difficult to put that experience into words.

I have always felt that I am an empath. Even in everyday life, I have often found myself sensing other people’s emotions and picking up on what they might be feeling, sometimes without them saying a word.

But this was the first time I had experienced something like this during meditation.

Afterwards, I had many questions. I tried to find answers from the facilitator, but I couldn’t get the clarity I was looking for.

Years have passed since then. Today, as I continue on my own spiritual journey and practise meditation regularly, I have a much deeper understanding of meditation and of my own experiences. What once left me confused has become something I look back on with greater clarity and reflection.

I don’t share this story to prove anything or to convince anyone of anything. I share it because it was a deeply personal and beautiful experience that touched me in a way I will never forget.

Perhaps some experiences cannot be fully explained. Perhaps we don’t always need to have all the answers to appreciate what they bring into our lives.

Sometimes, a moment of unexpected connection, a flood of emotion, or a simple embrace can remind us of the depth of human experience and the invisible ways in which we may feel connected to one another.

This remains one of my favourite stories from my meditation journey.

It reminds me that the world is full of experiences that can leave us wondering, feeling, and growing. And that sometimes, the most beautiful moments are the ones we never planned for and cannot fully explain.

To me, that is the beauty of life.

Miracles happen. And some of the most beautiful ones are felt by the heart long before the mind can understand them. ❤️
