Beyond the Physical: A Deeper Understanding of Yoga
Richa ·
Have you ever wondered who the human being really is beyond this physical body that we see?
What if we are more than just muscles, bones, and appearance? What if, at a deeper level, a human being is simply energy?
It may sound like a difficult concept to understand, and honestly, it is. But ancient yogic wisdom invites us to explore these questions a little deeper.
Today, yoga is mostly known through asanas (physical poses) and breathing techniques. While these practices are important, yoga was originally designed as something much more profound: a path to understand the human experience beyond the physical body.
In ancient yogic philosophy, there is a fascinating concept called the Panch Koshas, often described as the five layers or energy bodies of a human being. According to this wisdom, the physical body is only the outermost layer. Beneath it exist subtler dimensions connected to energy, emotions, awareness, and ultimately a deep state of inner bliss that cannot be seen, only experienced.
Maybe this is why true wellness can never be only physical.
Why Wellness Is More Than Physical
When we talk about holistic well-being, we often focus on the body because it is visible and easier to understand. But mental and emotional states are much more subtle. They cannot always be seen, yet they deeply influence how we feel and live.
In many cases, what appears in the physical body may have roots in emotional or mental imbalance. Everything within us is interconnected.
This is why yoga is far beyond physical exercise. When practiced together with breathwork, meditation, and awareness, yoga becomes a holistic practice, something that nurtures the body, mind, emotions, and inner self together.
Yoga Means Union
The word Yoga comes from the Sanskrit root Yuj, meaning “union.” A union of body, mind, breath, and consciousness.
Perhaps yoga is not really about touching your toes.
Perhaps it is about discovering who you are beyond the body itself.
